Simple Ways to Create a More Sustainable Workplace

Still overwhelmed by all the things you should be doing? Find momentum by starting with simple environmentally conscious workplace practices:

Waste Management

  • Reduce Paper Usage: Go digital. Opt for virtual documents and communication to minimize paper waste.
  • Organize Your Waste Bins: Set up clearly labeled bins for mixed waste, paper, plastics, glass, and aluminum.
  • Promote Reusable Materials: Encourage reusable cups, containers, utensils, and cloths to reduce single-use plastics. Provide these at your office as an investment — you’ll eventually get the cost back from no longer purchasing single-use products.
  • Recycle or Donate Old Electronics: While going digital can save paper, electronic waste can wreak havoc on the environment. Make sure any outdated electronics are donated, recycled, repurposed, or properly disposed of.
  • Prioritize Eco-Friendly Suppliers: Seek out suppliers and vendors with strong environmental policies.

Energy Conservation

  • Power Off Devices: Encourage employees to power down computers and unplug appropriate devices when not in use.
  • Install Smart Switches: Motion-activated or timed light switches can help preserve energy.
  • Upgrade Lighting: Install energy-efficient LED bulbs and utilize natural light where possible.
  • Utilize Smart Power Strips: Use power strips that automatically turn off electronics when not in use to reduce “phantom” energy consumption.

Water Conservation

  • Fix Leaks Promptly: Repair any plumbing leaks to prevent water wastage.
  • Install Low-Flow Fixtures: Upgrade faucets and toilets to low-flow alternatives to reduce water usage.
  • Promote Water-Saving Habits: Encourage employees to be mindful of water usage, such as turning off taps when not in use.

Remember: Implementing environmentally conscious practices is an ongoing effort. Start with manageable steps, and gradually expand your initiatives as your organization becomes more comfortable with sustainable practices.
